John Hasenstab Warrior Relays

About Coach John Hasenstab

In 2015, the Warrior Relays were renamed the John Hasenstab Warrior Relays to honor long time former head coach John Hasenstab. He envisioned this meet format in 1993 to be a test of team depth and versatility. After the 1986 team won the district title John said, “This is not just a track team. It is a track and field team. It includes all events, and the athletes perform very well as a team. We work at every event, all 16. Our emphasis on a balanced team is what led us to the district title.”

This total team philosophy continues to guide Walsh Warrior Track and Field teams. Under the 26 season intense and colorful leadership of ‘Staub, the Warriors captured 2 Sectional and 5 District Track and Field titles, sent competitors to the Ohio State Championships in every event (except the 4x100m. relay), for a total of 92 athletes. John had coaching knowledge in every event and the persistence and drive to bring forth an athlete’s best performance.

John not only founded and organized the Warrior Relays, but also ran the Northeast Ohio All-Catholic Meet, and the Warrior Indoor Track Meet. He was named N.E. Ohio Track and Field Coach of the year in 1994. During his tenure at Walsh Jesuit, John also spent 5 seasons as head cross country coach and was an assistant football coach for 14 seasons.

John now resides in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with his wife, Barb. For his many contributions to Warrior athletics, John was inducted into the Walsh Jesuit Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. We now name this meet in his honor.
